In Yunnan Province, Women Are in Charge Of the Roads

Yunnan (30 May 2013) - In the remote mountain area in Dehong prefecture, Yunnan province, People's Republic of China (PRC), women are in the unusual role of maintaining the condition of the roads.

The Yunnan Integrated Roads Network Development Project [2] is helping to build community-based women’s groups responsible for maintaining the condition of rural roads near their villages. The road maintenance group consists of 5 to 6 women who are paid based on the number of days they work. The maintenance teams are formed from Dai, Jingpo, De'ang, and Han ethnic groups and even from one of China's smallest ethnic minorities, the Achang. The project gives women confidence and improves their status in the family.
