ADB Insight: Reopening Tourism

Tourism is a foundation of the Asia and the Pacific economy. But once-bustling tourist hotspots now resemble ghost towns as the impact of COVID-19 casts a heavy pall over the industry. Estimates suggest tourism here stands to lose up to 70 million jobs and $1.1 trillion in revenue - more than any other region in the world. ADB Insight asks what will it take to revive tourism in Asia and the Pacific? How will we know when it is safe to open borders and restart travel? And how will the industry need to adapt in order to survive?

A subregional cooperation program focused on its fundamental strengths of community, connectivity, and competitiveness while embracing the core principles of environmental sustainability and resilience, internal and external integration, and inclusivity, for building a GMS community with a bright shared future
