In Cambodia, Improved Access to Affordable Electricity Helps Save Lives
New transmission lines bring cheaper electricity from the Viet Nam border to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital.

Though a hydropower project relocated villagers, it also brought electricity, roads, and schools to a remote valley.
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (9 July 2010) - The Asian Development Bank will invest $15 million to support clean energy projects in the Greater Mekong Subregion and South Asia through the Mekong Brahmaputra Clean Development Fund.
A Greater Mekong Subregion project helps builds a transmission line from Viet Nam to Cambodia to provide a steady supply of electricity to communities and industries in the southern part of the country.
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (21 August 2014) – The Asian Development Bank is supporting a 290-megawatt hydropower project in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic under a public-private partnership arrangement.
Better cross-border transportation and electricity links are central pillars of both the Greater Mekong Subregion program and Asian Development Bank's work in support of Cambodia's development.
The course enabled the participants to acquire a hands-on understanding of important electricity market concepts, including: (i) why wholesale electricity markets are generally cleared via uniform-price rather than pay-as-bid auctions, (ii) the operation of transmission constraints, (iii) how wind and solar affect electricity market outcomes, (iv) when suppliers have incentives to exercise unilateral market power, and (v) how fixed-price forward contracts can align supplier behavior with the policymaker’s goal of least-cost electricity supply, including when there are transmission constraints and high shares of wind and solar. The workshop was organized by ADB, ADB Institute, and Standford University Program on Energy and Sustainable Development.
