This working group serves as a platform to promote multilateral and bilateral coordination among the six countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion, particularly for cross-border health initiatives.
An annual meeting of the WGHC, development partners, civil society organizations, and other relevant organizations working on health cooperation in the subregion is held in the last quarter of each year. It is a forum for strategic discussion and planning. The annual meeting is hosted and chaired by a GMS country, rotating on an alphabetical basis.

The strategy development focal points of the Working Group on Health Cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) met in Bangkok on 25-26 July 2023 to lay out the road map for the GMS Health Cooperation Strategy 2024-2030. The meeting also discussed new areas of interest and possible partnerships, the process for upcoming country consultations, and the organization of the 6th GMS Working Group on Health Cooperation meeting to be held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China in December 2023.
The ADB and the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Cambodia convened the 5th Greater Mekong Subregion Working Group on Health Cooperation Meeting (GMS-WGHC-5 Meeting) on 13–14 December 2022 in Siem Reap.
The Asian Development Bank and the Nossal Institute for Global Health hosted a virtual meeting titled,Regional Meeting: How to Successfully Operationalize One Health for a Green Recovery in the Greater Mekong Subregion?” on 7 April 2022 to present practical One Health actions in the context of the GMS green recovery agenda, discuss how to incentivize cross-sectoral support, and guide operational planning for future projects. This meeting, which was conducted under TA 9571-REG: Strengthening Regional Health Cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion, is a follow up to the previous meeting held on 3 June 2021, One Health in the GMS: Where are We Now and What Next?
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) hosted a virtual event on 28 September 2021 to bring together stakeholders in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to discuss evidence-based practices and achievements and challenges of using digital technology for COVID-19 vaccinations.
The Asian Development Bank and the Nossal Institute for Global Health hosted a virtual meeting titled, “One Health in the Greater Mekong Subregion: Where are we now and where next?” on 3 June 2021 to share lessons learned in the use of multisectoral One Health approaches and priority actions identified under the TA 9571-REG: Strengthening Regional Health Cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
The 24th GMS Ministerial Conference (MC-24) was held on 4 November 2020 with the theme “Pave the way to a more integrated, inclusive, sustainable and prosperous GMS.”
The 11th Economic Corridors Forum (ECF-11) was held on 28 October 2020 with the theme “Boosting Competitiveness, Connectivity, and Community in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Corridors through Focused and Integrated Spatial Development.”
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held a joint virtual dialogue on Labor Migration in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) on 8 September 2020, with the aim of strengthening cooperation through enhanced labor migration management.
The Third Meeting of the GMS Working Group on Health Cooperation (WGHC-3) was held on 12–13 December 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. WGHC-3 was co-organized by the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) of Thailand and the ADB.
